MAJOR-GENERAL INDAR JIT RIKHYE (July 30, 1920 - May 21, 2007)
UTI president Aye Aye Thant, trustees and directors note with sorrow and regret the death of Major-General Indar Jit Rikhye on May 21, 2007 at the age of 86.
An esteemed trustee of the U Thant Institute, General Rikhye served from 1957 to 1967 as military adviser to Dag Hammarskjold and U Thant. In that capacity he managed peace-keeping forces in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
During the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, General Rikhye also served as Special Representative of U Thant and later represented the UN in Cuba during the mission to recover the remains of downed U-2 pilot, Major Rudolf Anderson, Jr.
Upon leaving the UN in 1969, General Rikhye founded and led the International Peace Academy -- a New York-based, conflict-resolution-focused, non-governmental organization that became the de facto UN peace-keeping training establishment.
The U Thant Institute offers its condolence to the General's family.
